   composer
   Born in Paris, Charles Koechlin studied at the École polytechnique, then at the paris Conservatoire (1889), where his teachers were jules massenet and Gabriel fauré. A complex polyphonist, always in classical form, Koechlin composed symphonic music that includes La Nuit de Walpurgis classique (1907), and Le Livre de la jungle (1939). He also wrote chamber music (sonatines, quartets for strings, sonatas), numerous melodies (Rondels, Shéhérazade), works for chorus and orchestra, and choreographic poems. An eminent pedagogue, Koechlin taught also in the United States (1918-28), was adviser to the Les Six, and counted among his students francis poulenc and Henri Sauguet.
